In 1960, the King County Bar Association established a Lawyer Referral Service.

For more than 50 years, the Lawyer Referral Service has been helping individuals and businesses find an attorney throughout Seattle and the greater King County area. The King County Bar Association's LRS is recognized by the American Bar Association for meeting its high standards for such services.

In fact, the King County LRS is the only referral service in the State of Washington that has earned certification from the ABA. Each year the Lawyer Referral Service makes over 6000 attorney referrals.

More than 350 local attorneys participate in the program. The participating attorneys work in King County or the surrounding areas including Pierce County and Snohomish Counties.

Those attorneys are pre-screened for their experienced in more than 36 different areas of law. The lawyers are also screened to ensure their good good standing with the state bar association. Attorneys in the service must also carry malpractice insurance.

The normal business hours for the service are on Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.


How To Use the Lawyer Referral Service

When you call the Lawyer Referral Service a trained staff person will talk with you about your legal problem. When a referral to an attorney is appropriate, the staff person will charge you a referral fee that must be paid in advance.

The nominal fee helps cover the expenses of the service. The processing fee is $10 for Personal Injury, Worker's Compensation, and Criminal Defense cases, The referral fee is $45 for all other cases except SSI/SSDI appeals. In making the referral the staff person will consider the geographical area needed and language requirements.

After you receive the referral, you can contact the attorney to schedule a consultation for up to 30 minutes at no additional charge. You may receive up to three referrals so that you can discuss your case with several attorneys before you decide how to proceed.
