Since 1974, the Massachusetts Bar Association has sponsored a Lawyer Referral Service from its office in Boston. The MBA's Lawyer Referral Service (LRS) is one of the largest such services in the United States.

The MBA LRS has helped more than 500,000 individuals or businesses find an attorney across the commonwealth. It makes tens of thousands of referrals each year to attorneys throughout the State of Massachusetts that serve on 36 different subject matter panels.

Using the Lawyer Referral Service of the MBA

When you call the MBA Lawyer Referral Service, your call will be answered by a trained staff member who works for the Massachusetts Bar Association. During the initial confidential consultation, the trained staff person will talk with you about the facts of your case, upcoming deadlines or court dates, and the names of all parties and attorneys involved.

The screening process helps the staff determine the the practice area most appropriate for the case and avoid any conflicts. The staff person will select an attorney in the appropriate practice area in a particular part of the state using a rotating system.

The attorneys that participate in the MBA Lawyer Referral Service agree to provide a 30 minute consultation in exchange for a nominal $25 consultation fee. During the consultation, you can discuss the case with the attorney and the attorney fees needed for additional representation.


Requirements for Attorneys in the MBA Lawyer Referral Service

Attorneys in the MBA Lawyer Referral Service must:

  • complete a membership application;
  • pay the annual MBA membership dues;
  • be licensed to practice in Massachusetts;
  • provides his or her Board of Bar Overseers number;
  • be a member of the Massachusetts Bar Association;
  • agree to provide an initial 30 minute consultation for the nominal consultation fee;
  • maintain minimum professional liability coverage of $250,000 / $500,000;
  • maintain the standards of eligibility and qualification as set forth in the Statement of Standards and Rules; and
  • agree to promptly notify the LRS of any suspension, disbarment, ethical censure or disciplinary action by the Board of Bar Overseers of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts or other discipline authority.
