AAJ Urges House Lawmakers to Oppose the SHOT Act
WASHINGTON, DC—American Association for Justice (AAJ) CEO Linda Lipsen issued the following statement in advance of a House Judiciary Committee Markup of H.R. 9298, the Stopping Harmful and Outrageous Torts (SHOT) Act: "More than two decades ago, Congress enacted sweeping immunity for firearm manufacturers and distributors, granting the industry unprecedented power to brazenly disregard Americans’ rights. Now, Congress is threatening to expand this outrageous and unparalleled exemption from accountability while stripping families of their right to hold the industry legally responsible. The disturbingly named SHOT Act would deny public accountability to countless families that have suffered unimaginable loss, requiring courts to immediately dismiss cases and providing even greater immunity for the firearm industry regardless of the industry’s proven conduct in causing so much harm. Congress should be working to repeal that immunity, not broaden it, and I urge the House Judiciary Committee to oppose the SHOT Act." ### The American Association for Justice works to safeguard rights, promote fairness, and strengthen access to civil justice—even when it means taking on the most powerful corporations. AAJ’s vision is justice for all.
