AAJ Urges Lawmakers to Oppose Build 250 America Act
WASHINGTON, DC—American Association for Justice (AAJ) CEO Linda Lipsen issued the following statement urging members of the U.S. House of Representatives to oppose the surface transportation reauthorization bill after it advanced through the House Transportation Committee early this morning: "While Americans are struggling to put food on the table, fill their gas tanks, and pay for medical care, the House Transportation Committee is focused on advancing legislation to provide giveaways to billion-dollar corporations at the expense of the very people they represent. What could have been a bipartisan package to make Americans safer on the road has become an unprecedented attempt to give immunity to companies responsible for sexual assault, life-altering injuries, and deaths. The surface transportation reauthorization bill passed by the Committee tonight would let powerful corporations dodge accountability to victims and survivors, and deliver bailouts to companies including immunity for Uber and other rideshare platforms when passengers are sexually assaulted or catastrophically hurt, corporate protections for vehicle rental companies that continue using outdated vehicles, and a provision to shield Turo and other peer-to-peer car rental companies from accountability when they put dangerous drivers and unsafe cars on the road. We strongly urge both Democrats and Republicans in the House to oppose the Build 250 America Act, which is nothing but another example of prioritizing profits over people." Raising serious concerns about the legislation, AAJ urged lawmakers to reject the provisions adopted during markup, specifically: Fong Uber Immunity Amendment 41 – Grants Uber blanket immunity when drivers commit sexual assault or drive recklessly, stripping victims of any recourse. Nehls Peer to Peer Immunity Amendment 93 – Provides immunity for peer-to-peer car sharing platforms, shielding them from accountability for passenger harm. Bresnahan Defective Vehicle Immunity Amendment 49 – Makes fixing known defective motor vehicles optional, removing any legal obligation to recall and repair.
