AAJ Statement Opposing the SCORE Act
WASHINGTON, DC—American Association for Justice CEO Linda Lipsen issued the following statement after the House Energy and Commerce and Education and Workforce Committees advanced the SCORE Act:
"College athletes deserve the same legal rights and economic freedom as every other American. But instead of empowering student athletes to take control of their own name, image, and likeness, the SCORE Act would limit their rights under state laws and prohibit them from seeking accountability from the NCAA for violations of the law. Even worse, the bill would give the NCAA immunity from being held accountable for suppressing student athlete compensation and denying student benefits. The SCORE Act is nothing more than a power grab by the NCAA under the guise of student athletes’ ‘rights,’ and it must be rejected by the House."
The following organizations have also expressed opposition to the bill:
Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA)
Major League Soccer Players Association (MLSPA)
NFL Players Association (NFLPA)
NWSL Players Association (NWSLPA)
United Soccer League Players Association (USLPA-CWA)
Women's National Basketball Players Association (WNBPA)
National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA)
Professional Hockey Players’ Association (PHPA)
