At Lawyer Legion, we recognize the important role that lawyer referral services play in helping the public find a local and qualified attorney in St. Louis, Missouri. The Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis (BAMSL) sponsors a Lawyer Referral and Information Service that helps the public and businesses find an attorney throughout the following areas:

  • City of St. Louis;
  • Metro East Illinois;
  • Jefferson County;
  • St. Charles County; and
  • St. Louis County.

The mission of the LRIS is to “assist the public in obtaining legal services.” This public service has been in operation for more than 70 years. According to its website, during the past year the LRIS made more than 13,000 referrals to lawyers and other agencies and services.

Missouri Supreme Court Rule 4-10.1 governs the operation of the Lawyer Referral Services. Additionally, the Bar Association Of Metropolitan St. Louis (BAMSL) Lawyer Referral and Information Service (LRIS) is recognized as meeting the strict standards set by the American Bar Association (ABA) for a LRIS.

How Does the Lawyer Referral Service Work?

The office hours of the of the BAMSL LRIS are from 9:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on Monday through Friday. You can leave a message by pressing "1" during the hours of operation or e-mail LRIS@bamsl.org.

The BAMSL LRIS has twenty-one major areas of the law in which it makes referrals, although the list is not exclusive.


What is the Fee for the Initial Consultation?

You can obtain the referral from the BAMSL for free. If you have the consultation, you must pay a $30 consultation fee. The fee can be given to the attorney or returned via check or money order in the self-addressed envelope that the BAMSL will mail to you one week after the referral is made. You can also pay with a Visa or MasterCard.

The consultation fee is waived for the following types of cases:

  • Personal Injury;
  • Social Security; or
  • Workers’ Compensation.

Additional attorney fees will be required if you decide to retain the attorney to represent you in any legal matter. The BAMSL LRIS does not provide pro bono attorneys. During the consultation, you can talk about your legal concerns, possible solutions, and the attorney fees required for additional representation.
