Legal Marketing Association (LMA)

Founded in 1985, the Legal Marketing Association ("LMA") is a non-profit professional organization that provides resources to attorneys and in-house law firm marketing administrators who want to develop their practices through learning the latest and most effective marketing and business development techniques. As a result, LMA brings together consultants, vendors, and marketing students.

Headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, LMA is focused on the latest developments for marketing, advertising and business development within the legal profession. The new executive director of LMA is Danielle Holland who has grown the organization both within the United States and abroad.

The LMA was founded so that individuals working to market legal services would have a forum to share and exchange ideas. The organization is also a great way to find legal marketing jobs through the LMA job bank.

Members of the Legal Marketing Association (LMA)

Legal Marketing Association (LMA) has more than 3,700 members across the United States, Canada, and 15 other countries. The organization estimates that 95% of the 200 law firms listed in the Am Law 200 employ an LMA member. Members of the LMA include:

  • practicing attorneys;
  • managing partners;
  • partners in charge of marketing;
  • law firm administrators;
  • business development directors;
  • marketing or business development managers and coordinators;
  • marketing heads/chief marketing officers;
  • communications directors; and
  • service providers to law firms.

The term "legal marketing" is defined to include advertising and other practices used within the legal profession, such as client relations, cross-selling, public relations and maintaining contact with past clients.

Upcoming Events of the LMA

LMA events are a great way to connect. The 2020 Legal Marketing Association Annual Conference will be held on Monday, March 25 - Wednesday, March 27, 2020, at the Gaylord Rockies Resort & Convention Center, Denver, CO. With specialized pre-conference programs and breakout sessions, the annual conference gives more than 1,400 legal marketing and business development professionals the opportunity to connect. 

In addition to the annual conference, you can also attend the fifth annual LMA P3 – The Practice Innovation Conference. During the two day conference, LMA brings together pricing, project management and process improvement experts. The 2020 P3 Conference will be held June 10-12, 2020, at the Swissotel. 

The upcoming 2020 regional conferences include the Tech Midwest Regional Conference from June 8-9, 2020, in Chicago. 

The past regional conferences have included: 

  • Midwest Regional Conference on June 18-19, 2019 in Detroit
  • Southwest Regional Conference on September 11-13, 2019, in Houston
  • Southeast Regional Conference on September 25-27, 2019, in Birmingham, Alabama
  • Tech West Regional Conference on October 21-22 in San Francisco
  • Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference on November 6 in Washington, D.C.
  • Northeast Regional Conference on November 14-15 in Brooklyn, New York

 


Local Chapters of the LMA

The Legal Marketing Association has 19 chapters across the United States and Canada. Each local Chapter helps to meet the regional needs of the members.
