National Association for Public Defense
The National Association for Public Defense is singularly devoted to effective public defense. NAPD is a 501(c)6 organization, as approved by the Internal Revenue Service.
Recognizing that the United States needs a clear and focused voice advocating for the right to counsel, appropriately resourced and independent indigent defense systems generally, the organization fights to protect the liberty of its citizens.
The organization promotes the policies and ideals of strong and effective public defense services through its members. Members include those in disciplines who dedicate their professional lives to preserving the right to counsel which include:
- public defenders;
- assigned counsel;
- mitigation specialists;
- social workers;
- sentencing advocates;
- administrative support; and
The National Association for Public Defense (NAPD) is supported almost exclusively by membership dues. Annual membership costs $25 for individuals and $20 for individuals joining with their entire organization. The organization has no “brick and mortar” expenses but employs three part-time staff members.
