WASHINGTON, DC - The American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) recognizes Luis Cortes Romero of Kent, WA, with the 2021 Advocacy Award for outstanding efforts in support of AILA's advocacy agenda.
Luis Cortes Romero is a living embodiment of immigration advocacy, as he himself received protection under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and served as co-counsel in the landmark case DHS v. Regents of the University of California before the US Supreme Court, which struck down the Trump administration's 2017 decision to end DACA.
Mr. Cortes Romero is the managing partner in Novo Legal Group's Washington Office where he practices exclusively in immigration litigation. Mr. Cortes Romero is a trial and appellate lawyer who has represented clients in a wide variety of immigration-related cases, including constitutional issues, challenging immigration detention, immigration consequences to criminal convictions. He has represented clients in high-profile constitutional litigation involving equal protection and due process claims. He also represents clients in connection with governmental investigations.
Mr. Cortes Romero has successfully represented clients before all branches of the immigration agencies, U.S. District Courts, various U.S. Court of Appeals, and the U.S. Supreme Court.
Additionally, he serves as an adjunct professor of law with the University of Minnesota Law School and a board member of the National Immigration Project. With Novo Legal Group, he continues his focus on impact litigation and zealously advocates for expansion of immigrant rights and protections throughout the United States.
