NYSBA LRIS

Since 1981, the New York State Bar Association (NYSBA) has sponsored a Lawyer Referral and Information Service (LRIS) from its offices in Albany, NY. The New York State Bar Association LRIS is recognized by the American Bar Association (ABA) for meetings its standards.

When you call, the trained staff will ask you a few questions to determine what type of attorney you might need. The information you provide is completely confidential. When appropriate the service will refer you to an attorney for a half hour consultation in exchange for a consultation fee of $35.

What Does the NYSBA LRIS Cost?

For most cases, the initial referral requires a $35 consultation fee. The $35 consultation fee is waived for certain types of cases including social security, personal injury, medical malpractice, veteran's law and military law, unemployment or workers' compensation.

During the consultation, you can discuss your legal concerns with the attorney at no additional charge. The attorney can answer your questions and talk with you about the attorney fees needed for additional services.

The lawyer referral service helps individuals and business find an attorney in 44 counties throughout the State of New York. Referrals are made statewide except in the following counties: Albany, Bronx, Broome, Dutchess, Erie, Kings, Monroe, Nassau, New York, Onondaga, Orange, Putnam, Queens, Richmond, Rockland, Suffolk, Sullivan, Westchester.

If the NYSBA LRIS does not have an attorney referral that will meet your needs, it may be able to provide you with contact information for a lawyer referral service that can better assist you. Additionally, you can find information at the end of this page to other lawyer referral services sponsored by the city and state bar associations in those counties not served by the NYSBA LRIS.

The Lawyer Referral and Information Service provides special assistance to veterans statewide. When appropriate, veterans are given a referral to an attorney that will provide a free consultation and offer services for reduced attorney fees.
