Lawyer Referral Services in Kansas

The Kansas Bar Association (KBA) sponsors a Lawyer Referral Service (LRS). In 2012, the Lawyer Referral Service was responsible for referring cases worth over $1.3 million dollars in attorney fees to attorneys in the state. The KBA Lawyer Referral Service is recognized by the American Bar Association for meeting its standards for these services.

The ABA certification process requires maintenance of experience panels. The KBA currently maintains an experience panel for several practice areas including:

  • Arbitration Laws;
  • Contested Custody;
  • Contested Property;
  • Federal Criminal;
  • Felony Crimes;
  • Mediation-Civil;
  • Mediation-Domestic; and
  • Mediation-Education.

When you call the referral service, a LRS call taker will ask you a few questions about your case to determine which type of attorney is needed for your particular case. If a referral is appropriate, you will be connected with an attorney interested receiving a referral in that specific legal category. Attorneys that participate in the program agree to provide a 30 minute consultation as soon as possible after a request.

Attorneys that participate in the Lawyer Referral Service must:

  • be in good standing with the Kansas Supreme Court;
  • pay an annual fee;
  • agree to abide by the Lawyer Referral Service Rules select the areas of law in which they are interested in receiving a referral; and
  • maintain professional liability insurance.
