Iowa has abandoned its Lawyer Referral Service program based on percentage fees and monthly reporting requirements. Today, Iowa utilizes a more modern directory that allows the public to search online for an attorney by city or county, practice area (optional), and language (optional).

The Iowa "Find-A-Lawyer" directory is a public service provided by The Iowa State Bar Association. The stated purpose of the directory is to help "its members and the public in locating an attorney." You can use the directory to search for attorneys that have indicated areas of practice in which they are willing to accept referrals. A listing in the directory does not indicate any degree of specialization.

Benefits of Using the ISBA Find-A-Lawyer Directory

All attorneys listed in the public directory are members in good standing of The Iowa State Bar Association. The ISBA charges the attorneys an annual fee to be listed in the directory. Not all attorneys in Iowa choose to be listed in the directory. If you want to find a complete list of attorneys licensed to practice law in Iowa, then visit the website of the Iowa Supreme Court to access its database of lawyers licensed in Iowa.

To participate in the directory, the attorney must:

• sign an attorney agreement contract and membership application;
• be admitted to practice law in Iowa;
• be in good standing with the Iowa Supreme Court;
• be a member of The Iowa State Bar Association; and
• carry professional liability insurance in the minimum amount of one hundred thousand dollars ($100,000) per occurrence.

Additionally, the attorney must agree to furnish a half hour appointment to persons referred for a $25 fee. The directory has more than 100 practice area,
