About the BACDL

Mission and History

The Broward Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (BACDL) is a non-profit organization located in Fort Lauderdale, FL, the county seat of Broward County. BACDL is a county chapter of the Florida Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (FACDL).

Broward County is the most populated county in the State of Florida and part of the greater Miami metropolitan area.

 

BACDL's mission is to "assist, support, and protect the Criminal Defense practitioner in the zealous defense of individuals and their constitutional rights." BACDL also serves to educate the general public on the administration of criminal justice and the importance of an independent, ethical and professional criminal defense bar.

Benefits of Membership in BACDL

The annual membership dues for BACDL are $60 for a private attorney or $30 for a private attorney who has practiced for less than three years. Memberships are also open to public defenders.

The benefits of membership in BACDL include:

  • discounts on continuing legal education (CLE) seminars;
  • access to a members only brief bank;
  • a listing on the public membership directory;
  • networking opportunities; and
  • mentoring opportunities for its members.

The Goals of BACDL

The goals of BACDL include: 

  • To sponsor quality continuing legal education (CLE) seminars on topics important to the criminal defense bar;
  • To maintain a close relationship with national, state and local criminal justice organizations;
  • To ensure zealous advocacy, due process, and justice for persons accused of crimes;
  • To maintain a high standard of integrity, honor, and ethics in the practice of criminal law;
  • To provide for the professional advancement of the individual members of the association;
  • To encourage persons of integrity and ability to aspire to the defense of the accused; and
  • To cultivate a spirit of good fellowship among members.

The Harry Gulkin Award

The Harry Gulkin Award is given out each year at an awards dinner by BACDL to a member of the bar who embodies integrity, gentility, and excellence in the practice of law. Past honorees include:
