Academy of Florida Elder Law Attorneys

Founded in 1993, the Academy of Florida Elder Law Attorneys (AFELA) is the Florida state chapter of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA). Along with other state chapters of NAELA around the nation, membership in AFELA requires membership in NAELA and adherence to its aspirational standards for professional behavior.

As the largest of the state chapters, AFELA provides education and support to the providers of legal advocacy, guidance, and services to enhance the lives of those with special needs including the elderly and disabled in Florida.

Recognizing that families often have difficulties making legal decisions affecting and elderly or disabled person, the AFELA helps to make those decisions easier by foster a community of private practice elder law attorneys through education and outreach.

Pre-eminent Organization for Elder Law Attorneys in Florida

As a non-profit professional association, members of AFELA work to improving the quality of legal services for the elderly and disabled. The organization provides advanced level education through in-person CLE seminars, publications, and other educational materials.

• access to the members-only group on LinkedIn;
• a listing in the organization's "Find a Lawyer" directory; and
• networking opportunities with many of Florida's top elder law attorneys.

Membership is open to Florida attorneys licensed to practice law in one or more of the covered jurisdictions who render legal services for the benefit of the elderly and people with disabilities. Members must be committed to the highest standards of ethics in representing the needs or promoting the welfare of the people it serves.

The Florida Joint Public Policy Task Force for the Elderly and Disabled advocates on public policy issues for seniors with support from the members of the Florida Bar Elder Law Section and the AFELA.

Criteria for Membership in the Florida Chapter

To become a member of the Florida Chapter, the attorney must first become a member of the National Academy of Florida Elder Law Attorneys. Members must be attorneys licensed to practice in one or more jurisdictions who render legal services for the benefit of the elderly and people with disabilities.

As a condition of membership, the attorney must pledge to support the Academy’s Aspirational Standards for the Practice of Elder Law. Visit the organization's website to learn more about the essential services it provides to elder law attorneys in Florida.
